Geography education is essential to almost every aspect of life, yet many people do not
have an understanding of what Geography is. Understanding the nature and purpose of
Geography is central to imparting love for the subject among secondary school students.
Many students do not realize how important the subject is to life and they are not aware
of the fact that the study of Geography is rewarding and exciting.
Understanding the historical development of the subject also helps students to become
knowledgeable of the controversies relating to the different approaches to the study of
Geography
For teachers to pass this knowledge on to their students, they themselves should be
exposed to the key concepts and different branches of study in the subject. They should
understand how children think in relation to acquiring Geographical skills, including
spatial awareness. When teachers understand the way children learn and think, they will
be better able to match their teaching to fit students’ learning styles, enhance their interest
in the subject, and make the teaching and learning of the subject more exciting.
