Course: CHE201: Chemistry Unit 2 - 1
Academic Year: 202425
Lecturer: Trudy Jackson
This course introduces students to essential reactions of carbon-based compounds in the field of
Organic Chemistry. Students will understand on a chemical level fundamentals underpinning the
various reactions that are responsible for processes encountered in the environment and life
around us. The preparation and reactions of key organic functional groups – alkanes, alkenes,
alcohols, halogenoalkanes, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids, esters, and amines, as well as
aromatics and macromolecules - will be studied. Students will be introduced to key organic
reaction mechanisms associated with each functional group. Students will also gain practical
experience with organic qualitative and quantitative analysis experiments, and basic synthetic
methods in the lab.
