Why Amazon Just Handed Its Advertisers Over To Chatgpt

For years, Amazon built a fortress around its retail empire. The company kept external artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini at arm's length, blocking them from poking around its ecosystem while frantically developing its own in-house AI shopping tools.

That wall just came down.

In a surprising pivot, Amazon Ads announced a partnership with OpenAI. Select U.S. advertisers running campaigns through Amazon's Demand-Side Platform can now extend their reach directly into ChatGPT. Early testers like Delta Vacations are already testing the waters.

If you think this is just another minor tech integration, look closer. Two giants with overlapping and aggressive ambitions just wired their systems together.

The Mechanics of the Amazon OpenAI Ad Deal

How does this arrangement actually function in practice? It splits the workload down the middle.

Amazon handles the campaign setup, management, and advertiser relationships through its programmatic ad infrastructure. Meanwhile, OpenAI retains absolute control over the ad delivery system. OpenAI's backend decides which sponsored placement actually appears, when it shows up, and where it sits relative to the text.

The units appear as subtle text or image blocks beneath a standard ChatGPT response, explicitly labeled as sponsored. If a user asks the chatbot for marathon training advice, they might see a targeted ad for running shoes sold through Amazon.

Nobody gave up full control. But both sides got what they desperately needed.

Why OpenAI Needed Amazon's Ad Machine

OpenAI didn't partner with Amazon because it lacked an audience. ChatGPT draws roughly 900 million weekly active users. Traffic isn't the problem.

Monetization is. OpenAI launched its ad business in February, bringing in early retail partners like Best Buy and Williams-Sonoma. By early September, that nascent ad operation crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate.

That sounds massive. Then you look at OpenAI's private target: $100 billion in advertising revenue by 2030.

Reaching that goal requires sustaining annual growth rates north of 200 percent. Building an enterprise sales operation, managing thousands of media buyers, and constructing complex buying infrastructure from scratch would take years.

Amazon already built that machine. With an advertising arm pulling in more than $70 billion on a trailing twelve-month basis, Amazon brings thousands of ready-to-spend corporate budgets right to OpenAI's doorstep.

Why Amazon Stopped Fighting the Chatbots

For Amazon, the logic comes down to where consumer attention is migrating.

Shoppers increasingly use conversational interfaces for product discovery, research, and purchasing decisions. Fighting that trend by locking down retail data made sense when AI was a novelty. It makes zero sense now.

Data from Sensor Tower reveals that Amazon was quietly the top retail advertiser on ChatGPT between April and August. They tested the waters, saw the traction, and decided formalizing the pipeline was better than watching competitors capture conversational real estate.

Chris Conetta, director of omnichannel supply at Amazon DSP, called conversational ads the fastest-growing engagement opportunity for brands trying to reach new audiences. By wiring Amazon's programmatic inventory into ChatGPT, the e-commerce giant captures ad spend on a surface it doesn't even own.

What This Means for Brands Right Now

If you run campaigns on Amazon's ad network, do not start rearranging your entire media budget today.

This current rollout is a limited U.S. pilot. It runs through existing enterprise accounts and programmatic tiers rather than an open self-serve dashboard.

Treat the launch as a signal. Conversational shopping is shifting from an experimental feature to a core performance channel. Product data needs to be structured for context-driven AI prompts, not just rigid keyword matching.

Watch for the performance data. Wait for real customer outcome metrics before shifting massive blocks of capital into conversational ads.

Talk to your Amazon Ads representative if you already manage heavy programmatic spend. Ask how early access tiers will expand once the pilot concludes. Position your brand to move the moment the doors open wider.
