This dark residue absorbs extra sunlight, accelerating the melt cycle even further.
Reaching the Tipping Point
Economist Lord Nicholas Stern famously dubbed the Himalayas the "Third Pole." Unlike the frozen poles at the ends of the Earth, hundreds of millions of people live directly beneath the Himalayas.
ICIMOD projects that most Hindu Kush Himalayan river basins will hit "peak water" around the middle of this century. That means glacier runoff will reach its maximum limit before experiencing a permanent, steep decline. Once that threshold passes, water scarcity won't be a distant hypothetical—it will be a daily operational crisis for agriculture and industry alike.
Addressing this requires practical, aggressive action. Policymakers must slash black-carbon emissions from industrial hubs, deploy widespread early-warning systems, and fundamentally overhaul mountain tourism regulations to ensure revenue stays local and funds ecological preservation.
The margin for error is gone. Stop treating the melting mountains as a distant headline.
