That is more than six hours every single day looking at glowing pixels. When you spend that much time navigating short-form video feeds, rapid-fire messaging apps, and hyper-stimulated feeds, your brain changes how it processes information.
OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann pointed directly to the emergence of "hasty reading." Students are losing the patience required to sit with complex prose, multi-layered arguments, or nuanced literature. Instead, they rush through text, skim for keywords, and frequently land on incorrect answers because they lack the sustained focus needed for deep comprehension.
Why Wealthier Households Aren't Immune
One of the most surprising findings in the recent data is that reading scores dropped even more sharply among teens from well-off backgrounds. You might assume affluence insulates kids from academic decline, but the opposite is happening.
Affluent households often give children unrestricted access to high-end smartphones, tablets, and personal laptops at much younger ages. Without strict boundaries on entertainment device usage, these teenagers trade physical books and quiet reading time for late-night scrolling. Access to technology does not guarantee academic success. Often, it provides a direct pipeline to endless distraction.
The Artificial Intelligence Trap in the Classroom
Beyond smartphones and social media, a new variable has entered the equation: generative artificial intelligence. Nearly half of all surveyed students admit they regularly lean on AI chatbots to complete school tasks, whether that means drafting essays, summarizing book chapters, or finding quick answers to research topics.
The shortcut comes with a heavy price tag. Students who rely on AI tools for their homework consistently score about 20 points lower in science assessments. In educational metrics, a 20-point deficit equals an entire year of lost learning. When an algorithm does the heavy lifting of thinking, analyzing, and synthesizing text, the student's own cognitive muscles atrophy.
How to Fix the Focus Deficit
