You have been lied to about the size of our planet your entire life. If you grew up looking at standard classroom charts, you probably think Greenland is roughly the same size as Africa. It's not. Africa is actually fourteen times larger than Greenland.

That massive visual lie stems from a single tool built nearly five hundred years ago. Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator sketched his famous projection in 1569 to help European sailors navigate using straight compass lines. He never intended for it to represent a balanced world. Because Earth is a sphere, flattening it forces compromises. The Mercator projection stretches regions near the poles while shrinking everything near the equator.

North America, Europe, and Russia balloon into giants. Meanwhile, the entire continent of Africa and large portions of South America and Asia get squashed into tiny shapes that completely misrepresent their true physical scale.

The United Nations finally decided to do something about it. In a historic vote, over 160 countries backed a resolution to move away from the outdated standard. Spearheaded by Togo on behalf of the African Union, the "Correct the Map" resolution encourages schools, international organizations, and tech companies to adopt proportional alternatives like the 2018 Equal Earth projection.

Maps shape how we think. When an entire continent is visually minimized, it creates subconscious biases in education, trade, and geopolitics. Togo's foreign minister put it plainly: a fair world begins with a fair map.

Unsurprisingly, the change faced pushback. The United States stood as the sole vote against the resolution, dismissing it as an ideological distraction rather than a meaningful international priority. Yet other Western nations are already shifting. France announced it would abandon the traditional layout in favor of proportional alternatives like the Eckert IV projection.

Switching map projections won't change physical geography, but it changes how humanity views global power dynamics. It's time to ditch a 16th-century navigation tool and look at an honest representation of the globe.
