If you want to understand why Serbia is drifting further away from Europe, look no further than the streets of Belgrade. European Union leadership has finally run out of patience. When top officials like Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa call official scenes "shocking" and "deeply regrettable," it is not just diplomatic hand-wringing. It is a breaking point.
Serbia spent decades trying to straddle two worlds. It claims it wants to join the European Union. At the same time, its political elite continues to coddle domestic nationalists who view convicted war criminals as heroes. That tightrope act just snapped.
The Funeral That Sparked a Diplomatic Crisis
Ratko Mladić died in prison in The Hague last month at age 84. He was serving a life sentence for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed during the horrific 1990s Bosnian War. Most nations would handle the death of a convicted architect of Europe's worst massacre since World War II with quiet discretion.
Not Belgrade.
Serbia turned his burial into a public spectacle. An estimated 16,000 mourners took to the streets. More damningly, high-ranking Serbian government figures showed up. Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic and Justice Minister Nenad Vujić attended the service. Even President Aleksandar Vučić's son, Danilo, made an appearance.
The presence of serving state officials sent a clear message. It told the victims of Srebrenica that Serbia's government still honors the man courts found guilty of genocide.
Brussels Responds With Blunt Condemnation
The European Union reaction was swift and furious. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa issued blunt joint statements on social media. They did not mince words. They stated that official support for the funeral demonstrates a complete failure to confront a dark chapter in recent European history.
Brussels didn't stop at words. EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos had already canceled a planned trip to Belgrade ahead of the event. She called the impending service a test for Serbia, and Belgrade failed miserably.
Diplomatic sources in Brussels whisper that the long-stalled push to open new negotiation clusters—such as Cluster 3—is now completely dead in the water. Eight member states were already blocking progress due to rule-of-law concerns and Belgrade's refusal to align with sanctions against Russia. Giving a platform to the "Butcher of Bosnia" makes any talk of EU accession look like a bad joke.
The Domestic Political Gamble
Why would President Vučić risk Serbia's entire European future over a dead general? The answer is simple and cynical. Domestic politics.
Vučić is trying to rally hardline nationalist voters ahead of snap parliamentary elections anticipated for late October. He knows his base includes millions who still see Mladić through a lens of distorted victimhood and nationalist mythology. By allowing government ministers to participate while publicly trying to distance himself from the worst of the optics, Vučić is attempting to play both sides.
It is a reckless gamble. While it might juice short-term poll numbers among ultranationalists, it alienates every single European capital. Even Britain felt compelled to summon Serbia's charge d'affaires to condemn the state's involvement. Serbia is walking straight into regional isolation.
What Happens Next for Belgrade
You cannot claim you want to integrate into a democratic European community while actively celebrating war criminals. History cannot simply be rewritten to suit a domestic election cycle.
If you are watching the Western Balkans, expect a deep freeze in relations. European funds will likely face tighter scrutiny, accession talks will remain paralyzed, and pro-EU reformers inside Serbia will find themselves increasingly sidelined by a regime doubling down on manufactured grievances.
Belgrade wanted to honor its past. In doing so, it just sacrificed its future.
